Millions of Americans are joining the gym in a bid to get fit and healthy in the New Year — but they could soon be working up a sweat in a different kind of way.

Fitness facilities are a hotspot for affairs, according to sex expert Jessica Leoni, who says workout classes supercharge libidos, leaving lusty exercisers ready to romp.

“Research shows that testosterone can spike for up to an hour after heading to the gym,” Leoni told the Daily Star on Friday. “This behavior can have an extraordinary effect on your sex drive and that’s why gyms are a hotbed for affair seekers this month.”

“Looking for potential flings over looking good yourself is a definite possibility,” she added, saying some people may have an ulterior motive for joining the gym.

Even if a person’s primary interest isn’t seeking out a partner at the gym, seeing sweat-soaked, scantily-clad patrons huffing and puffing could bring sex to the forefront of the mind.

Leoni says many married men and women strike up conversations with other clients, but they aren’t always so innocent in intention.

She calls such communication “micro-cheating,” and claims they can eventually lead to full-blown affairs.

“There’s some obvious actions in the gym that can be classed as micro-cheating,” the expert explained. “Offering to spot someone, or give a bit too much unsolicited advice on nutrition and fitness is a giveaway.”

“Spending too much time with a personal trainer after the session has finished is another tell-tale sign,” Leoni added.

Leoni said a person may “peacock” in the gym in a bid to attract attention.

“Micro-cheaters might run much faster than usual or lift heavier weights in an effort to prove that they’re a strong and suitable candidate for an illicit affair,” she explained.

The sex expert said people should become suspicious if their partner suddenly develops a fixation with the gym and is spending ample amounts of time there.

“If you’re worried about your partner, it might be worth mentioning before they head for their next workout,” Leoni stated, saying communication about acceptable behaviors was key.
